The Best Way To Store Green Onions In The Refrigerator

When stored properly, green onions can last in the fridge for up to a month. The problem? Most people don’t know how to store their green onions correctly, often getting a few days from them, at the most. That’s why we want to teach you the best way to store green onions in the refrigerator.

The key to storing green onions in the refrigerator is to keep them wet, although not too wet. A bit of humidity will go a long way. The best method is to wrap the green onions in a damp paper towel. It is important that the roots of the scallion are cut off before you place them in the fridge. This will slow down the rotting process.

Let’s talk a little bit more about the best method for keeping green onions fresh in the fridge. We will also give you an alternative method, just in case you want something a bit different.

The Best Way To Store Green Onions In The Refrigerator

This method requires a bit of effort but will ensure that your green onions keep in the fridge for as long as possible. You will need paper towels for this, as well as a water spritzer.

  1. Remove the rubber band from your green onions
  2. Throw away any green onions that have started to rot
  3. Wash the green onions
  4. Pat them dry. You want there to be as little moisture on them as possible.
  5. Cut the roots off of the green onions. Just the root part, not the whole scallion.
  6. Slice the green onions in half.
  7. Place the green onions on a paper towel.
  8. Place another paper towel on top of the green onions, sealing them in.
  9. Wrap the green onions up. You don’t want them to be exposed to the air.
  10. Lightly spritz the paper towel with water. You want it to be damp, but not soaking wet.

You can place the paper towel-wrapped green onions into a bag. Alternatively, you can just place the green onions directly into the fridge. You can place them anywhere in the fridge, but we find that the crisper draw seems to squeeze a small amount of extra life out of the green onions.

Alternative Options For Storing Green Onions In The Refrigerator

The alternative option is to store the green onions in a jar in the fridge. This has a couple of benefits:

  • You won’t have to cut the roots off
  • The green onions can remain ‘whole’, which is great when used as a garnish
  • The green onions will continue to grow

Of course, the last one may not be ideal for some people. If the green onions continue to grow, then they will continue to develop flavor. This means that, eventually, the flavor is going to be much harsher. Most people don’t want that. This means storing the green onions in this way could drastically reduce their lifespan (probably by a couple of weeks), but it is still better than just placing the green onions in the fridge without doing much to them.

This method is easier, though. Just follow these steps:

  1. Remove the rubberband from your green onions.
  2. Throw away any green onions that are rotting.
  3. Find a jar that is big enough to hold the green onions. Make sure it is clean.
  4. Wash the green onions and place them, roots down, into the jar.
  5. Add about an inch of water to the jar. You want there to be enough to cover the roots.
  6. Place in the fridge.
  7. Change the water once per day.

You can keep the jar in a bag if you wish. However, we don’t really find this necessary. Not unless you have a lot of stuff in the fridge that doesn’t smell great.

Conclusion

The best way to store green onions in the refrigerator is to wrap them in slightly damp paper towels. If you do this, then they could last for a month in the fridge. If you want your green onions to grow a little bit more, which would strengthen the flavor, then you can store them in a jar instead. Although, that requires a lot more space in your fridge.
