Do Built Bars Need To Be Refrigerated?

Built Bars are famed for having no preservatives. This means that while they are healthier than other protein bars, they have a  shelf-life around 6 months. Because they don’t have preservatives like some other protein bar options, a lot of people wonder whether they need refrigerating.

So, do Built Bars need refrigerating? No, they don’t. You can keep them in a cool, dry location and they should be good for six months. However, you can refrigerate them. In fact, you can freeze them too. Some people claim that they taste a bit better when you do that.

On this page, we’ll talk a little bit more about Built Bars and refrigeration. We’ll let you know why some people opt to keep them in the fridge. You can then decide whether refrigerating Built Bars is for you.

Do Built Bars Need Refrigerating?

As we said, there is no need for you to refrigerate your Built Bars. You can if you wish. They taste great at any temperature.  We prefer them when they are stored in the fridge, and there are a few reasons for this.

If you have ever eaten a room-temperature Built Bar, then you know that they are prone to getting a bit soft. They still taste delicious, but the texture isn’t that great. The problem is a lot worse during the warmer months of the year.

When you put your Built Bars in the fridge, you’ll be hardening them up a little bit. They taste much better like that. If you aren’t a fan of room temperature Built Bar, try refrigerated Built Bar. It is a completely different experience.

A lot of people that keep their Built Bars in the fridge will cut them up into chunks beforehand. This way they have nice little Built Bar snacks that they can munch on. This is a great idea if you don’t feel like chowing down on a whole Built Bar at once, or perhaps because you want something that you can feast on throughout the day.

You cannot store ‘chunks’ of Built Bar at room temperature. As soon as you cut into the Built Bar, it will expose the inside. This can cause it to lose flavor or, worse, allow bacteria to grow. Remember, there are no preservatives preventing that from happening!

On top of all of this, cooled-down Built Bars taste so much better after a long workout session. They can help to cool you down a little.

Should You Refrigerate a Built Bar After Opening?

The one time where you must store your Built Bar in the fridge is if you have opened it. Because there are no preservatives in a Built Bar, they are especially prone to bacterial growth if left at room temperature for too long.

If you have opened the Built Bar but you aren’t going to eat it right away, put it in the fridge. Wrap the product packaging as tightly as you can around it (you don’t want to expose the Built Bar to the inside of your fridge).

If you’ve opened your Built Bar, you should consume it within a few days.

Will Refrigerating Built Bars Increase Shelf Life?

Built Bars have a shelf life of about six months. By the time you have them in your hands, there may just be a few months left until the expiry date. The low shelf life is all thanks to no added preservatives.

Many people wonder whether keeping their Built Bars in the fridge will increase their shelf life. The answer is ‘probably’. Although, at the most, you are increasing the shelf life by a couple of weeks. It’s barely anything.

We wouldn’t recommend that you buy a ton of Built Bars with the plan of storing them long-term in the fridge. It’s a waste of money. They don’t taste as great after the expiry date.

If you do want to store the Built Bars long-term, then store them in the freezer. In theory, you can store them indefinitely there. Although, we recommend that you consume within 6-12 months of expiry for the best flavor.
